Solar Carport - Kuga Electrical

COMMERCIAL SOLAR CARPORTS

Solar carports are comprised of a purpose-built steel structure that holds a canopy of panels, as well as a separate shaded or enclosed structure to house the inverters and grid protection. Not only do they create shade over the car park area, but they also serve to generate renewable electricity for the property.

Solar carports allow your business to utilise existing car park areas to achieve financial and sustainability goals while providing a nice, shaded canopy for employees and visitors.

The team at KUGA Electrical are experts at designing and installing solar-ready carports that generate a fast ROI. Enquire with our team to start planning your new solar carport today.

Solar Carport Benefits

Solar carports have many benefits that simultaneously serve your employees, visitors, business, and the environment.

Flexibility

One key benefit of solar carports is their flexibility, especially when compared to standard roof-mounted solar panels.

A solar carport is not restricted to a set angle, which means it can be tilted for optimal sun exposure and energy collection capacity no matter where your business is located.

Even on a simple flat roof, a rooftop setup often comes with structural issues that demand workarounds. These workarounds can impede efficiency and potential energy savings over the long term.

With this in mind, it makes sense to consider the virtues of a dedicated structure with which to leverage solar panels for your business.

Offset Business Energy Expenses

Like all commercial solar systems, the solar carports allow your business to tap into the free and abundant energy of the sun.

The energy generated by the solar panels runs through the solar inverter and can then be used to power your business and can even be stored for later use with solar battery storage.

You’ll immediately notice a dip in your businesses’ energy bills, which will eventually cover the cost of the solar carport. KUGA Electrical can even help you take advantage of business solar rebates to reduce the upfront cost of your solar carport.

Efficient Use of Space

Like rooftop solar panels, a solar carport efficiently uses existing space within your business.

If you already have a car park that your employees or visitors use, a solar carport allows you to monetise this existing space with a long-term asset.

Increased Shade and Safety

Aside from generating renewable energy for your business, a solar carport also does the job of standard carports, shading vehicles and drivers from the sun.

This can be particularly beneficial in areas where the weather at your business is extreme or unpredictable.

Environmentally Responsible

Adopting solar panels in your business through a solar carport also shows the world that you’re doing your part for the environment.

Environmentally conscious customers will notice and appreciate the effort your business is making to adopt renewable energy solutions and help society divest from fossil fuels.

Solar Carport Installation Process - How KUGA Works

At KUGA Electrical, we employ a three-stage process for solar carports. This careful, step-by-step process ensures that we only install the most efficient, safe, and durable solar carports for our clients.

Design

  • Feasibility Assessment: This initial step involves determining whether a solar carport is a suitable solution for your business. This is especially relevant if you have limited or unsuitable roof space, or commercial entities looking to utilise your parking areas effectively.
  • System Sizing and Design: The size of the solar carport is determined based on your business’s energy consumption needs. The goal may vary from covering energy needs to maximising car park coverage while maintaining future-proofing.
  • Geotechnical Study and Structural Planning: A geotechnical study of the soil is conducted to inform structural engineers about the steel requirements and footing types needed for a secure installation.
  • Electrical Design: This stage includes planning for optimal efficiency, involving cable sizing, and layout of solar strings.

Procurement

  • Structural Steel Fabrication: Upon receiving structural drawings, a structural steel fabricator is engaged. The fabricator creates shop drawings from the engineer’s designs, which, upon approval, lead to the start of fabrication. This process can take one to three weeks, varying on the size of the project.
  • Galvanisation and Delivery: Post-fabrication, the steel undergoes galvanisation for protection against rust and to ensure longevity. After this, the galvanised steel is delivered to the site so the installation phase can begiin.

Installation

  • Foundation and Footings: Installation begins with preparing the footings, which involves cutting concrete or asphalt in existing car parks or prepping the ground in new car parks. The type of footing used is based on soil conditions, terrain, and weather.
  • Steel Erection: This phase involves installing columns and rafters, section by section, followed by purlins. Checks for uniformity and alignment are essential throughout this process.
  • Panel Installation and Wiring: Our CEC-approved electricians install the solar panels and manage the wiring, both within structures (intra-structure) and connecting to inverter stations (inter-structure). Wiring is typically routed through underground conduits.
  • Final Testing and Commissioning: After solar panel installation, electrical tests such as voltage and current insulation resistance checks are conducted. This leads to the final system commissioning and handover.

After handover, the KUGA team will outline maintenance requirements and set up a maintenance schedule with you. Our support staff are always standing by to help ensure your new system is set up and operating at peak efficiency.

Solar Carport FAQs

Find answers to commonly asked questions about solar carport for business owners.

Yes, solar panels can be affixed to a structure that also serves as a carport for vehicles parked at your business. They are an excellent way to shade vehicles while converting the sunlight that would have hit them into power that your business can use.

The world’s largest solar carport is installed at Biddinghuizen in the Netherlands and is 350,000 sqm, supporting a massive 90,000 solar panels.

A solar canopy and solar carport are similar in that they are overhanging structures that support a solar panel system. The main difference is that a solar carport is larger and more open than solar canopies, which are typically enclosed on three or four sides. A single solar carport will take up less space than a double solar carport.
